Inside one of the muon detector chambers in the LHCb experiment at CERN. When the experiment is running these chambers are filled with a mixture of argon, tetrafluoromethane and carbon dioxide and these electrodes in this mixture detect the presence of muons, an unstable high-mass particle present in the final stages of many meson decay events produced in the LHC.
