DNA research. X-ray crystallography diffraction pattern obtained in research to determine the structure of A-DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). A-DNA is more compact and less common than B-DNA structural form. This image, XR 35, was produced by British chemist Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) while at the MRC Biophysics Research Unit at King's College London, UK. It was here in the early 1950s that Franklin and Maurice Wilkins obtained X-ray diffraction patterns for DNA that led to James Watson and Francis Crick constructing the DNA double helix model. This led to the award of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Crick, Watson and Wilkins.
