Caption

Calcium sulphate crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of crystals of calcium sulphate (CaSO4), or gypsum. Calcium sulphate is used as plaster of Paris. Calcium sulphate is also one of the minerals that hardens water. Hard water leaves deposits when boiled off or evaporated. This is the source of the limescale that is found inside kettles and other appliances. Magnification: x1270 at 6x7cm size.
