Illustration of the location of immune cells infected by HIV. The viral infection is extremely active as immune cells flow round the entire body and are spread through all body tissue. Lymphatic tissue, glands and the digestive tract have a high level of infection and replication. The infected TCD4+ lymphocytes and viral particles are also present in the lungs, spleen, thymus and brain. The viral infection is easily detectable in the genital compartments due to the state of the reservoir cells, but also the state of the infectious viral particles which are at the origin of sexual contamination.
