Tartaric acid crystals, polarised light micrograph (PLM). Tartaric acid (C4.H6.O6) is found in grapes as well as some other fruits. It is used in the manufacture of fizzy drinks, and as a component of baking powder. Other uses of tartaric acid include medicine, dye-making and the silvering of mirrors.
