Polarised light micrograph of Brachionus sp. freshwater rotifers and their eggs (dark blue circles). These rotifers can also be found in brackish (slightly salty) or alkaline waters. They possess small pedal glands that secrete a cement-like substance allowing them to anchor themselves to surfaces. Their eggs are very resilient and can withstand extreme conditions. Magnification: x160 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
