Bird brain. Light micrograph of a section through the brain of a brown quail (Coturnix ypsilophora). At top is the cerebral cortex, which contains many layers of neurons (nerve cells) and support cells. At right and left are the optic lobes, which process visual stimuli and are particularly large in birds. At centre is the thalamus, with the hypothalamus below it and the pituitary gland below that. Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
