Sparrow chick skin. Light micrograph of a section through the skin of a sparrow chick (Passer domesticus). The surface of the skin is at bottom and shows developing feather quills. The quill is the portion of the feather that is embedded in the skin. Beneath the skin are blocks of muscle (red). Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
