Caption

Cat small intestine. Light micrograph of a section through the duodenum, the first section of the small intestine, of a cat (Felis domestica). The lumen (white) is at centre. It is lined by villi (finger-like projections) that greatly increase the surface area for digestion of food. Surrounding the villi is the submucosa. It contains Brunner's glands, which secrete an alkaline mucous that neutralises acid and lubricates the intestine. Surrounding the submucosa are two layers of smooth muscle that contract and relax to push food along the intestine. Magnification: x2.5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
