Cat ovary. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a cat (Felis domestica) ovary showing showing follicles (round) in various stages of maturity. A mature Graafian follicle is at upper centre. Within the follicle is the developing oocyte (small dark pink circle). Also within the follicle is a fluid-filled cavity (light pink), known as the follicular antrum. The oocyte becomes an ovum (egg cell) when it is released into the oviduct (fallopian tube, right). In cats ovulation is induced by mating. Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
