Graafian follicle. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a cat (Felis domestica) ovary showing a mature Graafian follicle (larger circle at centre). Within the follicle is the developing oocyte (smaller circle at centre). Also within the follicle is a fluid-filled cavity (light pink), known as the follicular antrum. The oocyte becomes an ovum (egg cell) when it is released into the oviduct (fallopian tube). In cats ovulation is induced by mating. Magnification: x37 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
