Appendix. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a human appendix. The appendix is a blind-ended tube attached to the caecum of the colon (large intestine). At centre is the lumen (white). The inner layer of the appendix is the mucosa, which contains lymphoid tissue (red). This is surrounded by a layer of submucosa and then a layer of muscle. The outer layer is the serosa, which contains blood vessels and nerves. Magnification:x5 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
