Human uterus. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the middle (bottom) and inner (top) layers of a human uterus (womb). The middle layer, the myometrium, is mostly made up of smooth muscle. The inner layer, the endometrium, contains blood vessels and glands (white surrounded by dark purple). It thickens during the menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy. The very innermost layer consists of ciliated epithelium. Magnification: x4 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
