Cerebellum. Light micrograph of a section through the cerebellum of the brain of a sheep (Ovis aries). It consists of inner white matter (light brown) and outer grey matter (orange and dark brown/orange branched areas). The white matter mainly contains axons, which pass nerve impulses to the brain's outer cortex. The grey matter is made up of two layers of neurons (nerve cells), the molecular layer (dark brown/orange) and the granular layer (orange). The cerebellum controls sensory perception, motor control and coordination. Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
