Earthworm. Light micrograph of a transverse section through an earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris). The outer layer of the skin is the epidermis (dark orange), which contains glands that secrete mucus to aid the worm's movement. Beneath this are layers of muscle (brown). At centre is the intestine, with the typhlosole (an invagination that increases surface area) at top. The nephridia, which are similar to kidneys are purple. At bottom centre is the nerve cord (orange). Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
