Phosphoric acid crystals. Polarised light micrograph of typical rhombus-shaped crystals of phosphoric acid (H3.PO4). Phosphoric acid is produced by adding sulphuric acid to calcium phosphate rock. Phosphoric acid is used in fertilisers, water softeners and as a food additive. Magnification: x115 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
