Arbutin. Polarised light micrograph of arbutin (C12.H16.O6) crystallising. Arbutin is used as a skin whitening agent. When combined in a cream with the enzyme tyrosinase it stops the formation of the skin pigment melanin and promotes its decomposition and drainage. Magnification: x30 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
