First photograph of the Sun. Engraving of the first daguerreotype photograph of the Sun taken on 2nd April 1845 by the French physicists Louis Fizeau (1819-1896) and Leon Foucault (1819-1868). Sunspots (dark areas) are seen on the Sun's surface. The image, which measured 12 centimetres across, was taken with an exposure of 1/60th of a second. Image taken from 'Astronomical Photography' (1961) by G. de Vaucouleurs.
