West Nile virus (WNV) particle, computer artwork. WNV particles (virions) consist of an outer protein coat (capsid) encasing RNA (ribonucleic acid), the genetic material of the virus. WNV is most commonly spread by mosquitoes and ticks. 70 to 80 per cent of those infected suffer no symptoms, though around 5 per cent will develop a fever, and 1 per cent will develop severe neurological illness.
