Caption

Macro photograph of a Dagger Fly (Empis livida). Dagger flies are carnivorous and will often settle on flowers whilst waiting to predate on other insects attracted to the nectar and pollen. Dagger flies are usually 9mm in length and are aptly named, using their long sharp probocis to pierce the exoskeleton of their prey.
