Caption

Comminuted fracture of the tibia. Labelled artwork and corresponding X-ray of a severely comminuted facture of the tibia in a patient's right leg. The fibula has also been fractured, as has the talus (ankle bone). A comminuted fracture is where the bone has broken into several pieces. This was also an open fracture, where the bones protruded through the skin. It was classed as a grade 3A fracture. Such fractures require surgery to reset, repair, and pin the bone fragments.
