Caption

Comminuted fracture of the femur. Labelled artwork and corresponding X-rays of a fracture of the femur (thigh bone) in a patient's right leg. This is a comminuted fracture of the proximal femoral shaft with lateral displacement of the distal major fragment. A comminuted fracture is where the bone has broken into several pieces (fragments shown). The blue arrow shows how the femoral shaft below the fracture point has rotated to the right. At lower right, the knee-cap (patella) has also fractured. This is a severe injury, requiring surgery to reset and pin the femur with rods, plates and screws.
