Internal fixation of lower leg bones. Labelled artworks and corresponding X-rays of internal fixation applied to fractures of the lower leg bones (tibia and fibula) in a patient's left leg. At left is a posteromedial view of the fractures of the tibia and fibula before surgery. The tibial fracture is comminuted, where the bone has broken into several pieces. The medial view at right shows a rod and screws implanted across the tibial fracture to hold the broken bone in place, allowing it to heal in the correct alignment. The fibula (not seen at right) also had internal fixation carried out.
