Facial skull fractures. Coronal computed tomography (CT) scan of fractures of the left orbital and maxillary facial bones of the skull. The fractured bones are labelled and highlighted (light brown). Fluid (pink) has accumulated in the adjacent maxillary sinus. Such fractures are typically caused by blunt force trauma to the cheek and eye. One of the functions of the skull bones is to protect organs like the eye from damage.
