At upper centre, retractors hold back the overlying tissues and the colon is raised up and the cancerous area located and the colon resected (cut) with a stapler device. At lower left, the cancer has been removed and the free end of the colon is passed through the abdominal wall and secured with sutures. The resulting stoma is shown at lower centre. At right, the incision has been closed and a colostomy bag placed over the stoma to receive faeces.
