Hysterectomy incision. Artwork of the incision made in the female abdomen to access and remove the uterus, a procedure known as a hysterectomy. The location of the incision on the female groin is shown at top left. At left is the initial incision, with retractors pulling back the skin and muscle and fat layers. At right, further retractors are used to pull back the internal organs (mainly intestines) to reveal the uterus and ovaries. These organs are part of the female reproductive system. Conditions treated by hysterectomy include uterine fibroids and uterine cancer.
