Compartment syndrome, artwork. This syndrome is a life-threatening condition that can arise when injury to a limb (normal appearance at upper right) creates insufficient blood supply to muscles and nerves due to increased pressure (lower left) within one of the body's compartments such as an arm or leg. If untreated, the lack of blood supply damages the affected muscles and nerves.
