Craniectomy, 3D model. This is a lateral view of the right-hand side of the skull. At centre a section of bone is being removed in an operation known as a craniectomy. If the bone section was replaced, the operation would be known as a craniotomy. Both operations are carried out to relieve brain swelling and pressure caused by blunt force trauma that fractured the skull. The skull flap may be repaired or replaced, secured with metal plates and screws.
