Light micrograph of a transverse section through a water lily (Nymphaea sp.) leaf. At upper frame is the upper palisade layer. It contains several stomata, pores that are the site of gaseous exchange in the plant. The large air spaces beneath it form the lower layer of the leaf and allow the plant to float on the surface of a pond or lake.
