The Apollo 17 lunar module, Challenger (centre), on the surface of the moon, December 1972. Photographed by Apollo 17 astronauts Gene Cernan and Dr Harrison 'Jack' Schmitt. As of 2014, Apollo 17 is the last manned lunar mission to have ever taken place. This mission, the last Apollo mission, landed in the Taurus-Littrow region of the Moon. Cernan and Schmitt explored the area for three days (11-14 December 1972). Cernan was the last person to walk on the Moon.
