Comparison of scale models of the 1981 Space Shuttle and 1988 Buran spacecrafts. The Space Shuttle (right) was built in 1981 by NASA, and was used on 135 missions including satellite launches, the Hubble Space Telescope launch, and construction of the International Space Station. In response to the US Space Shuttle program, the Soviet Union built the Buran spacecraft (left) in 1988. Buran completed one unmanned spaceflight in 1988, and remains the only Soviet shuttle to be launched into space. The Buran program was cancelled in 1993.
