Copernicus lunar crater, photographed by the Lunar Orbiter unmanned spacecraft. The Lunar Orbiter surveyed the moon and sent photographs and data back to Earth as part of preparations for the Apollo lunar missions. The craft was part of a series of five unmanned Lunar Orbiter missions launched by NASA between 1966 and 1967. Over the course of the Lunar Orbiter program, 99 per cent of the Moon's surface was mapped.
