Mars as seen from the surface of its moon Phobos, computer artwork. Phobos orbits Mars about 6,000 kilometres from the Martian surface. It orbits so close to the planet that it moves around Mars faster than Mars rotates. It is getting closer at rate of about 1 metre every 100 years, so it is predicted that in about 50 million years it will either break up into a planetary ring or collide with the planet. The bright area on Mars is the Hellas basin, possibly an early impact area.
