Caption

Oesophageal cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a carcinoma (cancerous tumour) in the epithelium of the oesophagus (gullet). Cancerous cells can be seen in pink with dark nuclei. The risk of developing oesophageal cancer increases with excessive drinking and smoking. Treatment is by surgical removal of the oesophagus (oesophagectomy). If left untreated, the cancer may block off the oesophagus, and metastasise (spread) to other organs.
