Eugenicists Mjoen and Whitney. At left is Jon Alfred Mjoen (1860-1939), President of the Norwegian Consultative Eugenics Commission. At right is Leon Fradley Whitney (1894-1973), Secretary of the American Eugenics Society (AES). Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. The AES was founded in 1923. Mjoen, one of the leading eugenicists in Norway, helped found the International Federation of Eugenics Organizations (IFEO) in 1912. Mjoen advocated theories of Nordic superiority, published in his journal 'Den Nordiske Race' (The Nordic Race). Photograph from the American Eugenics Society.
