Stomach cancer, light micrograph. Section of tissue from a gastric carcinoid tumour (purple mass at centre), arising from the enterochromaffin cells in the mucosa (stomach lining, top). Carcinoid tumours are often symptomless, but a small proportion become malignant (cancerous) and spread to other organs. Risk of developing gastric cancer increases with age and the consumption of salty or pickled foods.
