Rectal tumour, gross specimen. This is a cross section through a villous adenoma, a benign (non cancerous) growth in the lining of the rectum. It may develop into a malignant (cancerous) rectal cancer if left untreated. Villous adenomas are characterised by a cauliflower-like appearance and thick, elongated villi (finger-like projections), seen here at centre. The risk of developing a villous adenoma increases with age.
