Caption

Bartini ground-effect vehicle. Model of a ground-effect vehicle (GEV) developed by Soviet aircraft designer Robert Bartini (1897-1974). Bartini, who worked in the USSR from 1923, submitted over 60 GEV designs. GEVs achieve their effect through an aerodynamic interaction between the wings and the surface, known as ground effect. They are also known as sea skimmers and wing-in-surface-effect (WISE) ships, and are often classified as boats. Photographed in 1977.
