Geoffrey Marcy (born 1954), US astronomer, against a background of the lights of the University of California, Berkeley, campus, surrounded by light trails representing the orbits of exoplanets. Marcy is one of the world's leading researchers into planets around stars other than our Sun. Together with his team, he discovered 70 of the first 100 exoplanets identified. Unlike the planets of our solar system, the orbits of most of the exoplanets Marcy and his team have discovered are squashed into extreme elliptical shapes. Marcy has been Professor of Astronomy at UC Berkeley since 1999. Photographed in May 2006.
