Caption

Geoffrey Marcy (born 1954), US astronomer, in his office at the University of California, Berkeley. Marcy is one of the world's leading researchers into planets around stars other than our Sun. Together with his team, he discovered 70 of the first 100 exoplanets identified. Marcy has been Professor of Astronomy at UC Berkeley since 1999. The equations on the whiteboard behind him relate to the effects of Einstein's theory of relativity on the measurements of the Doppler shift that allow his team to detect planets. Photographed in May 2006.
