Port Lockroy, Antarctic Treaty Historic Site No. British Base A. The base was used for research until 1962, including the first measurements of the ionosphere, and the first recording of an atmospheric whistler (a phenomenon created by geomagnetic storms) from Antarctica. It is now a museum and home to a small Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) colony.
