Testicular cancer, light micrograph of a section of a testicular teratoma. Teratoma is a type of germ cell tumour as it arises from sperm precursors and contain cell populations derived from all three embryonal layers (ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm) although the proportion of each need not be equal. In this section bone and cartilage of mesodermal origin are present (red and yellow). Testicular cancer is uncommon, accounting for less than 1% of all malignancies in men but having higher incidences in younger men. Teratoma of the testicle accounts for 40% of testicular cancers and is most common between the ages of 20 and 30 years but can occur at any age from infancy to adulthood. Magnification: x 60 when printed at 10 centimetres tall. Human tissue.
