Caption

Lymphangitis (inflamed lymph vessels). Inflamed area (red) on the arm of a 41 year old male patient, following a laceration to the hand. The lymph vessels carry lymph fluid round the body and are also a part of the immune system. Inflammation of lymph vessels and nodes (glands) occurs when the system is overwhelmed by an infection. The patient may also have a fever, and there is a danger that the infection may spread to the bloodstream. Treatment is with antibiotics to control the infection, and with anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling.
