Caption

Broken toe. View of the big toe of a 73 year old woman showing extensive bruising caused by a fracture of the toe. Toe fractures are fairly common; in this case a frozen turkey was dropped onto it. The impact has ruptured blood vessels in the toe, allowing blood to leak into the surrounding tissues. A large blood blister (dark red) has formed and the nail is bruised. Toes, especially the big toe, are used for balance while walking. An injury such as this may make walking very painful. Crutches may be required until the toe has healed. Broken toes are usually immobilised, and heal well in a few weeks.
