Caption

Big toe treated with silver nitrate after surgery for an ingrowing toenail. The ingrowing section of the nail has been removed and granulation tissue has formed in its place. This is composed of new connective tissue and blood vessels, and is part of the healing process. However granulation tissue (sometimes called 'proudflesh') may overgrow, and silver nitrate is used to cauterize it, allowing more normal tissue to grow and complete healing.
