Inaugural LeRoy Apker Award. US physicists William Alfred Fowler (left, 1911-1995), David E. Heckerman (centre), and Norman Foster Ramsey (right, 1915-2001). Fowler is congratulating Heckerman on receiving the inaugural 1978 Leroy Apker Award from the American Physical Society. The award, presented to outstanding young physicists, is named after US experimental physicist LeRoy Apker (1915-1970), in whose memory the award was founded. Heckerman received the award for his research on low-temperature acoustics. Fowler shared the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics. Ramsey shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physics. Photographed in 1978.
