Caption

From left to right: German physicist Walther Wilhelm Georg Bothe (1891-1957), French physicist Francis Henri Jean Siegfried Perrin (1901-1992), Dutch physicist Hendrik Brugt Gerhard Casimir (1909-2000), and US physicist Luis Walter Alvarez (1911-1988). Bothe shared the 1954 Nobel Prize for Physics with Max Born for work in particle physics. Alvarez won the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physics, also for work in particle physics. Casimir worked in quantum physics, and Perrin worked in nuclear physics.
