Distribution of solute atoms in a sample of aluminium alloy. This image was taken by atom probe tomography (APT). In blue are zinc atoms, and in green are magnesium atoms. Aluminium atoms have been removed from the image. APT is an imaging technique used to visualise the position of each atom in a sample, along with its chemical composition.
