Control panel of the Druzhba pipeline, Russia. This control room is near the city of Almetyevsk, where the Druzhba pipeline begins. The pipeline, which began operating in 1962, is the longest oil pipeline in the world. It measures over five thousand kilometres and can carry over 2 million barrels of oil per day. It begins in eastern European Russia and has branches that supply a number of Eastern European countries, including Ukraine, Poland and Hungary, as well as Germany. Photographed in 1971.
