Malignant mesothelioma. Coloured frontal chest X-ray of the lungs of a male patient with malignant pleural mesothelioma (opaque areas at centre and bottom right). This is a cancerous tumour in the lining of the lungs (mesothelium), caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a soft crystalline material that was used in construction and insulation. Many people exposed to asbestos dust develop lung cancers and disorders several years later. Asbestos is now banned, but it is still present in some old buildings.
